DOCUMENTS
Getting legally married in Mauritius Island is a straightforward process, provided all legal documents are prepared well in advance. Below is a complete checklist of the documents required for a civil marriage in Mauritius for non-residents. You should start obtaining required documents well in advance, since some countries may take up to 2 months for getting verifications, or more, if dealing with embassies.
Kindly email us verified copies of the following documents in PDF. To note, all originals must be presented in Mauritius for verification.
- Valid Passports (2 clear photocopies of the first 6 pages/each)
The passport must be valid for at least 6 months including the duration of stay in Mauritius. - Two clear photocopies of each birth certificate, for both spouses
Birth certificates must be issued within three months of the wedding date. Older issuing dates will not be accepted. If not in English or French, they must be officially translated. - Marital Status Documents (if applicable)
– Divorce decree / final divorce certificate (if previously married) Provide the judgment + certificate of no appeal + certificate of no appeal to the Court of Cassation.
– Death certificate of former spouse (if widowed) Certificate of non-pregnancy (medical certificate) may be required in cases such as remarriage within 10 months of divorce/widowhood. - Name Change Documents (if applicable)
Deed Poll / official certificate of name change (if your name has changed from that on your birth certificate). - Certificate of Non-Citizenship / Non-Residence
For two non-citizens or non-residents, you must obtain a certificate confirming you are neither citizens, nor residents of Mauritius. This is issued locally, after document verification by the Civil Status Office. Some couples are also required to swear an affidavit attesting to your status before the Supreme Court or Registrar.
Document Translation and Certification
All foreign language documents must be translated into English or French by an official translator and stamped. Certain documents may require apostille or legal certification for use in Mauritius.
In addition to above documents, French nationals should produce a “Certificat de capacité de mariage”.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Witnesses
Two witnesses (each at least 18 years old) must be present at the civil wedding ceremony. If you are arriving alone, we will be happy to assist.
Arrival & Timeline
Couples must arrive in Mauritius at least 3-4 working days before the wedding.
Legal formalities are completed at the Civil Status Office. We will make appointment and take you to and back to your hotel. Once approved, the civil wedding can legally take place and Publication of marriage banns legal will take place as it is a mandatory legal notice.
