LEGAL AND RELIGIOUS WEDDINGS IN BALI
Bali falls under Indonesian national marriage law, and civil/legal registration is separate from any symbolic ceremony you might have. Procedure will depend on your nationality and if your Embassy is located in Bali / Indonesia. We strongly advise our couples to contact us before making any further plans. We will be happy to advise and guide you through.
There are 2 conditions to legally marry in Bali, therefore you will have to have two ceremonies on the same day, at the same location: one religious and one civil, except for Muslim couples.
The Couple has to be of the same religion. Recognized religions in Indonesia are Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. If not, bride or groom should sign a letter that he, or she intends to marry in one of the religions they agreed upon, without pressure or force from his/ her partner. The letter should be legalized by the Consulate office or local government.
The ceremonies will be attended by both representatives: Your religious leader: Priest, Monk or Pastor and Registrar from Indonesian Civil Registry Office (Kantor Catatan Sipil). You will receive both; Religious and Official Marriage Certificate in Indonesian and English languages and will become officially registered under Indonesian law. For most nationalities this certificate is valid in their countries.
For Muslim couples there is no need for an additional civil ceremony. The religious ceremony is held by a representative of the Office of Religious Affairs (‘Kantor Urusan Agama’). The ceremony is already considered as a legal marriage.
Religious ceremonies under Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christian-Protestant can be held everywhere in Bali: in your hotel/villa, on the beach, cliff, or temple. If you intend to marry under the Catholic religion the ceremony needs to be held in a Catholic Church in Bali and for the reception you can choose any other place.
